Core Manager School

A few weeks ago now I returned from St. Charles, Illinois, where I attended Core Manager School. It was my fourth trip to the Q Center in my 6+ years with Accenture, so naturally, it was filled with lots of new faces and introductions. But it was also filled with several familiar faces – including people I’d met during previous classes and colleagues from past projects, and even a few names I’ve seen over the years, but had never met in person. I also ran into someone I went to college with. I didn’t realize even worked for Accenture, but as it turns out, she’s also based in the Washington, DC office.

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending in an International Women’s Day celebration in Rewari, India. One of my project teams was invited to participate by an NGO that we are hoping to partner with on a Shared Voice to Access project. The organization runs about 100 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for women in nearly 50 villages in the state of Haryana, which is close to Delhi and brought these women together on March 8th to celebrate – women.

It is that time of the year! Although there are plenty of Accenture recruiting activities throughout the year I am usually involved around this time. The next few months will be somewhat busy for me.

The Reverse Culture Shock

I've finally returned to the US after spending nearly seven months in Delhi, India and I'm readjusting to life here. It's strange going through a sort of reverse culture shock, where things that were normal to be just seven months ago are now a bit strange.

“Roll off” is a very common term in the consulting world and I’m busy preparing for my next one. Next Friday, I will finish up my six-month stint with Accenture Development Partnerships (ADP) in Delhi, India. In addition to packing up my belongings and moving back to the Washington, DC area, I also have to wrap up my projects and ensure there is proper handover to the next resource.

As I was wrapping up my work yesterday, I realized that I had spoken to people in the UK, the US, South Africa and India – all in a matter of two hours. It’s quite interesting how connected the world has become. And not only is it necessary to talk to people around the world, it’s also never been easier.

Mid-Year Review Time

Here at Accenture, mid-year review season is in full swing. In March and September of each year, employees set aside time to receive feedback on their performance from career counselors. These reviews are conducted in March (mid-year reviews) and September (annual reviews). During these sessions, two main topics are covered: 1) a review of your performance feedback from current or previous projects and 2) a discussion of your professional development goals and steps to take to reach them.

Shared Access to Voice Projects

The month of January has been a very busy one for me as the three Shared Access to Voice projects I’m managing have made tremendous progress. One project was launched in December and we’ve made several trips to the field since then to monitor the entrepreneurs’ progress and recruit additional participants. The second project just launched last Thursday, which was a huge accomplishment and we hope to significantly increase our numbers in the coming months. The final project I’m working on should launch within the next month after experience delays. But it is on the right track now and everyone involved is optimistic. I’ve included a few photos from my recent visits to the field where we’ve met with local entrepreneurs.

Holidays in India

This Friday is Republic Day in India (not to be confused with Independence Day, which is celebrated on August 15th). On Friday, most public and private institutions will be closed for the public holiday to celebrate 57 years since India became a republic. This is especially true in the capital of New Delhi, where the massive Republic Day Parade will close most of the streets in Central Delhi for the entire morning. I actually tried to attend the full dress rehearsal of the parade yesterday, but I was turned away at the security gate because I was carrying my cell phone. The tremendous amount of security here, from train stations, to shopping centers and even movie theaters, is worth an entry of its own.

On Sunday evening, I traveled to Pune, a city in Maharashtra state, for several days of meetings with my client from London and some of our partners in India and South Africa. You might have heard of Pune because this is where Brangelina stayed for a few months at the end of last year when Angelina was filming a movie here. Their presence was the talk of the town, the country and the world, for that matter. Once, the cover story on national paper included a photo of them taking a rickshaw ride around town.

My Two Cents - Advice for New Hires

Now that I’m finally working in town again, I’m trying to take advantage of several opportunities to participate in local events. Last Wednesday, I helped out with the New Joiner Orientation that was taking place in the Reston office. Officially, I was a presenter for a lunch discussion, but all I really had to do was show up, enjoy lunch and answer a few questions about Accenture.

On Sunday afternoon, I traveled to Chicago to begin my nearly annual trip to St. Charles, Illinois, or a training class at the Q Center. This time around I'm attending Core Manager School, a required class for all new managers within the company. I love going to St. Charles because it reminds me of how multi-national, diverse and talented our company is. Every time I meet fascinating people from around the world that are doing all sorts of exciting work. This time, I'd barely stepped out of the airport when the people-meeting began.

Conducting Interviews

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to conduct interviews for New Hire Office Visits. New Hires are either just finishing up college or have a few years of work experience. By the time I met them, they’d already gone through several rounds of interviews and this was the final test, so to say. The final meeting provided a chance for them to meet Accenture employees and for employees to share with the applicants their experiences working with the company. Ideally, it would be a good match for everyone. It was my first time conducting interviews and it was a lot of fun.
